Brief introductions

- Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU – HCMC) was established on January 27th, 1995 according to the 16/CP decree of the Government based on forming from 9 into 8 member universities and was officially published on February 6th, 1996.

- In 2001, VNU – HCMC was re-organized according to the 15/2001/QĐ-TTg decree (February 12th, 2001) of the Presidential Government. Similarly to VNU – Ha Noi, VNU – HCMC has its own regulations of organization and activities. VNU – HCMC, as follows, is a centre of graduate and post-graduate education, and also of science-technology research in various fields and majors with advanced quality so that this will be the core of the system university education in order to meet the requirements of society – economics development.

- Currently, there are 5 member universities, 1 institute, 1 faculty and a number of research centres and services being included in VNU – HCMC as listed here: University of Technologies, University of Natural Science, University of Social Science and Humanities, International University, University of Information Technology, Institute for Environment and Resources, Faculty of Economics and Law, Information Technology Park, Central Library, Center for International Education, Center for Educational Testing and Quality Assessment, Center for Military Education, Center for Foreign Language, Center for Services and Investment Promotion, Center for Training and Human Resources Development. Furthermore, VNU – HCMC also involves High School for the Gifted which is responsible for training the gift students in various majors such as Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, English, etc.

- The VNU – HCMC’s administrative organ is placed at Linh Trung ward, Thu Duc district. VNU – HCMC is currently being constructed on an area of 643.7 ha at Thu Duc - Di An project zone following the model of a modern science city.

- The scale of VNU – HCMC mainly is training, in both of graduate and post – graduate, is 49,714 with 74 majors in Graduate level, 89 in Master level and 91 in PhD level in various fields such as technical technology, natural science, social science-humanities and economics science.

- About the human resource, VNU-HCMC has 3,510 civil servants in total which includes 2,165 in teaching staff (1,532 have Graduate Degree, 164 are in PhD Degree or Professors)

- VNU – HCMC is always in researching for improving the quality of training programs, teaching methods, human resource constructing investment, infrastructure development to upgrade the educational quality in order to satisfy the demands from society-economics development and Industrializing – Modernizing Country career successfully complete the mission being assigned by the Party and State.
